Lowerye Del Boy. updated: 05/06/2010
Lowerye Del Boy (ZVY 3198) was the highest muscularity lamb in the 2003 Sire Reference Scheme. He CT scanned with the best gigot shape of any lamb that year and was only bettered by L.Eric (ZVY 4090) the following year. He is the highest index son of Lowerye Bert (ZVY 1001).
Lowerye Del Boy (ZVY 3198).
L.Del Boy is a tremendous carcass sheep, he is long with an extremely wide, full loin and superb hindquarters. His fleece is extremely tight and dense and he is absolutely correct in the mouth and feet, having short pasterns and dark feet, like his sire. He was always a thick, heavily fleshed lamb that had a line of muscling down his back from an early age and his progeny exhibit the same qualities.
He is an easy fleshing ram that is always in good condition and full of meat off grass. He scanned with an eye muscle of 36.3mm and a fat depth of 2.8mm at 150 days old. His gigot shape score from CT scanning was 69.6 and his muscularity ebv is +8.03mm.
He was selected by Robert Gregory (Edstaston flock) as a lamb and initially sold to that flock, when his exceptional ebv came back , Robert kindly agreed to sell me a half share back! Being so closely bred to the majority of the Lowerye flock he is of limited use to me but Robert has used him heavily with some fantastic results, a son of Del Boy being sold for 1,750 gns at the 2005 Premier Sale, another son sold to the Foulrice flock at the 2007 Premier Sale for 1,900 gns and another seeing heavy use in the Edstaston and Dalby flocks. Another, L.Juggernaut (ZVY9040) has been retained here, having been our "stand out" lamb of 2009 backed up by a CT gigot score of +8.02, the third highest to date!
Sire: Lowerye Bert (ZVY 1001) was the highest index, and several people have said the best, son of Highway Mr Softie (ZDG 8014), who was Champion at the Royal Show in 1999.
Lowerye Bert (ZVY 1001).
L.Bert was an extremely stylish, long, well fleshed ram from a daughter of our old stock sire, Foulrice Lionheart (DG 5137). He was used sparingly due to his maternal g.sire's close relationship to a large proportion of the Lowerye flock and always bred stylish, easy fleshing sheep, several of which were sold into pedigree flocks. One such son, Lowerye Dynamo, was used heavily as a Sire Reference Ram in Eire along with several of his sons. A daughter of Bert has also bred L. Great Guns (ZVY 6084), the highest index stock sire in the breed in 2007.
Dam: ZVY 1074 was a quad daughter of Foulrice Lionheart (DG 5137) out of a milky daughter of Cairnhill Captain. She always breeds and rears a pair of exceptional lambs with Del Boy being the first.
Obviously his breeding is so close that I have extremely limited use for the ram but where I can use him, he is breeding very well, leaving consistently wide, full loins and a tight skin. His daughters in both flocks are proving to be extremely milky, as would be expected from the pedigree. His maternal ebv is the highest in the breed at +1.92kgs.
Our heaviest lamb in 2007 was a triplet L.Eric (ZVY 4090) son out of a Del Boy daughter. He weighed 48kg when we weighed in mid-February and 75kg at scanning in early May. He was born a triplet and reared as a twin by his dam.
Having used Del Boy again in 2008, we have some exceptional lambs on the ground by him again. One of which stands out as my pick of the 2009 lamb crop.
